The north rose of Chartres, the Rose of France

The medal takes up the rose of the north transept of Chartres cathedral, the Rose of France, given around 1230 by Blanche of Castile, mother of Saint Louis. It is one of the most famous roses of the Gothic world: the Virgin and Child at its centre, surrounded by twelve medallions, then a ring of twelve squares set on their points and a final ring of half-circles. Those diamond-set squares are its signature, and are immediately recognisable on the medal: the central circle, the twelve petals, the twelve rotating squares and the outer lobes, carved in jewellery-grade mother-of-pearl and rimmed in gold. The know-how of Mayaud rose windows

Manufacture Mayaud is the only workshop in the world to make cathedral rose windows in jewellery-grade mother-of-pearl. Each rose window takes many hours of work: the tracery is drawn from the rose itself, then carved and engraved in mother-of-pearl at the scale of a medal, without simplifying anything. It is a complex know-how, developed in our Paris workshop, of which we are very proud, and which we inaugurated with the Notre-Dame de Paris rose window, the first ever offered in mother-of-pearl and 750/1000 gold. Natural extra-white mother-of-pearl of jewellery grade, set in an 18-karat yellow gold rim, bail included, from 1.40 g of gold in 20 mm to 1.70 g in 26 mm. Rim in polished finish.

Diameters and variations

Four diameters, 20, 22, 24 and 26 mm: the larger the medal, the more finely the tracery can be read. The Chartres North rose window is also available in silver and mother-of-pearl, and the south rose of Chartres answers it. To be worn on an 18-karat yellow gold trace chain.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Chartres rose window medal be engraved? Yes: the reverse of the mother-of-pearl is smooth and takes an engraving, first name and date, carried out in the workshop with the engraving package.

Which diameter to choose? The 20 mm for a christening or a child, the 22 or 24 mm for everyday wear, the 26 mm to read the tracery in all its fineness, as a pendant.
