Virgin Medal La Pieta

La Pieta is an 18-karat yellow gold medal depicting the face of the Virgin Mary, bowed, eyes lowered, as seen in the Pietà: the mother looking upon her son.

A Virgin Mary's face, bowed

The medal shows only Mary's face and shoulders, in three-quarter view, her head inclined downwards. A veil resting on her hair, its folds finely worked, frames a young and grave face, eyelids lowered; the tunic, with its pleated collar, closes the composition. There is no halo and no inscription: only this gaze descending towards what the medal does not show, and which everyone knows. This face recalls the one Michelangelo gave to the Virgin of his Pietà, in St Peter's in Rome, a very young Mary of silent sorrow. It is a medal of contemplation more than of christening: one offers it to a mother, to a godmother, to someone going through a trial.

A medal struck in the traditional way in 18-karat gold

Like all our gold medals, La Pieta is made by stamping: the 750/1000 gold blank is struck under an engraved die, which gives the face and the folds of the veil their relief, then given a satin finish. The gold weight is 2.90 g in 18 mm. Made in France, in our workshop.

Engraving and variations

Offered in 18 mm, the classic medal size, the one worn for a lifetime. The smooth reverse takes an engraving, first name, date or a few words, carried out in the workshop with the engraving package. La Pieta is available in gold and mother-of-pearl and in solid silver, to be worn on an 18-karat yellow gold trace chain.
