This christening medal in 18-karat yellow gold depicts the Virgin and Child beneath two large radiant halos, which give the scene its light.

A radiant Virgin and Child

It is the halos that strike you first: two suns engraved in fine rays, one behind Mary, the other behind the Child, meeting at the centre of the medal. Mary wears a veil over her hair and a garment whose drapery falls to the edge; she lowers her gaze towards her son, whom she holds against her. The Child, nestled in her arms, raises his head towards her and reaches out his hand to the Virgin. Both faces are highly expressive, to the point that one reads on Mary's something like a restrained smile. Our sculptor played on the contrast between the engraved radiance of the halos and the soft modelling of the faces: this is what makes this christening medal so luminous on a chain or at the wrist, even in 16 mm.

A christening medal struck in the traditional way in 18-karat gold

Like all our gold medals, this Virgin and Child is produced by stamping: the 750/1000 gold blank is struck under an engraved die, for a crisp and lasting relief, then satin-finished. The gold weight is 2.30 g in 16 mm and 2.90 g in 18 mm. Made in France, in our workshop.

Diameter, engraving and variations

The 16 mm is the christening size; the 18 mm, the classic size. The smooth reverse takes an engraving, first name and date, carried out in the workshop with the engraving package. The same Virgin and Child is available in gold and mother-of-pearl and in silver and mother-of-pearl, to be worn on a trace chain or a curb chain in 18-karat yellow gold.
