Mother-of-Pearl Medals

Our mother-of-pearl medals are carved in natural, jewellery-grade mother-of-pearl, then set in an 18-karat gold or solid silver rim, in our Paris workshop. The subject takes on the softness of a cameo and a light no metal can give.

Mother-of-pearl, a material apart

Mother-of-pearl is not a metal: it is a natural material, from the shell of certain molluscs. The subject, Virgin, angel or cathedral rose window, is carved into it rather than struck. We choose an extra-white, jewellery-grade mother-of-pearl; being natural, it may show very slight variations from one piece to another.

Gold and mother-of-pearl, or silver and mother-of-pearl

The mother-of-pearl is set in a polished rim, bail included: in 18-karat yellow gold or in solid silver. Our Signature rims, beaded, rope or knot, give the medal a decorative outline. All our mother-of-pearl medals are made to order in Paris, in 2 to 3 days.

Cathedral rose windows

Manufacture Mayaud is the only house in the world to carve cathedral rose windows in jewellery-grade mother-of-pearl, starting with that of Notre-Dame de Paris. See our guide cathedral rose windows as medals.

Frequently asked questions

Is mother-of-pearl fragile?
It stands up well to daily wear; above all, avoid prolonged contact with cosmetics, perfume and other chemicals.

Can a mother-of-pearl medal be engraved?
Yes: the mother-of-pearl reverse is smooth and takes an engraving, first name and date, done in the workshop.

Which size of mother-of-pearl medal for a christening?
Mother-of-pearl medals are slightly larger than metal ones: 18 or 20 mm suits a child, 22 and 24 mm everyday wear or a pendant.

Where to buy a mother-of-pearl medal made in France?
Manufacture Mayaud carves its mother-of-pearl medals and sets them in gold or silver in its Paris workshop; they can be ordered online and at the boutique at 25 rue Vaneau, Paris.

Summer at the Workshop

Our creations continue to be carefully crafted throughout the season.

Some pieces take time: cutting, fitting, engraving, polishing… every step matters. With the summer holidays, some lead times may be slightly longer, and certain productions, notably rings, will resume from September.

The Paris boutique and the workshop will be closed from 11 to 15 August.

Orders placed on the website between 8 August and 16 August will be shipped from 17 August.

Outside these dates, the boutique welcomes you from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm and from 2:30 pm to 7 pm.

Thank you for your patience and your trust.
