Saint John Cathedral Lyon Rosette

This Rose Window Medal depicts Saint-Jean Cathedral (also called the Primatiale Saint-Jean-Baptiste-et-Saint-Étienne) in Lyon, more precisely in the medieval quarter of Vieux Lyon.

This medal is crafted in natural jewellery-grade mother-of-pearl and rimmed in 18-karat gold. It is made 100% in France, and every Saint-Jean Cathedral rose window is the fruit of many hours of handwork... It is a complex design that demands great mastery and care from our engraver.

This rose window is nicknamed the rose of the setting sun, because it is of an almost surreal beauty when the sun is going down. It then takes on a warm colour, a yellow recalling gold.

It is also commonly called the "rose of the Lamb", because of the Lamb that appears at its centre.

We owe the creation of this incredible rose window, dating from 1394, to Henri de Nivelle. An incredible work which we wished to honour by creating, with care and relentless work, this rose window in mother-of-pearl rimmed in gold.

The design of the rose of the setting sun

On the medal, one finds the structure of this rose of 1394: a central quatrefoil, six large heart-shaped petals blossoming towards the edge, separated by six narrower petals, and a ring of trefoil lobes closing the whole. It is a flamboyant Gothic design, more organic than the radiating roses of the thirteenth century, and one of the most beautiful to see carved in jewellery-grade mother-of-pearl: the hearts of mother-of-pearl look like flower petals. The gold rim closes the rose. A Lyon rose window medal, for those who have watched the sun set over the primatiale from the banks of the Saône.

The know-how of Mayaud rose windows

Manufacture Mayaud is the only workshop in the world to make cathedral rose windows in jewellery-grade mother-of-pearl. Each rose window takes many hours of work: the tracery is drawn from the rose itself, then carved and engraved in mother-of-pearl at the scale of a medal, without simplifying anything. It is a complex know-how, developed in our Paris workshop, of which we are very proud, and which we inaugurated with the Notre-Dame de Paris rose window, the first ever offered in mother-of-pearl and 750/1000 gold. Natural extra-white mother-of-pearl of jewellery grade, set in an 18-karat yellow gold rim, bail included, from 1.40 g of gold in 20 mm to 1.70 g in 26 mm. Rim in polished finish.

Diameters and variations

Four diameters, 20, 22, 24 and 26 mm: the larger the medal, the more finely the petals can be read. The Lyon rose window is also available in silver and mother-of-pearl, in openwork solid 18-karat gold and in openwork solid silver. To be worn on an 18-karat yellow gold trace chain.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Lyon rose window medal be engraved? Yes, in mother-of-pearl and gold: the reverse of the mother-of-pearl is smooth and takes an engraving, first name and date, carried out in the workshop with the engraving package. The openwork versions in solid gold and silver, however, cannot be engraved.

Which diameter to choose? The 20 mm for a christening or a child, the 22 or 24 mm for everyday wear, the 26 mm to read the tracery in all its fineness, as a pendant.
