This 18-karat yellow gold christening medal takes up a Virgin and Child by Sandro Botticelli: Mary tilts her face towards her son, who raises his hand to her cheek.

A Virgin and Child from Florence

Mary's veil, edged with a finely engraved border, falls in soft folds around a face with lowered eyelids. The Child, nestled against her, places his hand on her cheek and looks at her. Two halos drawn with a single line close the composition. Here we find what makes Botticelli, painter of the Florence of the Medici in the second half of the 15th century: the pure line of the faces, the slightly grave sweetness of the Madonnas, that restrained tenderness which made his Virgins and Child the most beloved of the Renaissance. Transposing a painting into relief is a delicate exercise; our sculptor has kept the essential, the Child's caress and the tilt of the face.

A christening medal struck in the traditional way in 18-karat gold

Like all our gold medals, the Botticelli Madonna is made by stamping: the 750/1000 gold blank is struck under an engraved die, for a crisp and lasting relief, then given a satin finish. The gold weight is 2.30 g in 16 mm and 2.90 g in 18 mm. Made in France.

Diameter, engraving and variations

The 16 mm is the christening size; the 18 mm, the classic size. The smooth reverse takes an engraving, first name and date, carried out in the workshop with the engraving package. The Botticelli Madonna is available in gold and mother-of-pearl, in solid silver, in vermeil and in an Excellence version with a deeper relief, to be worn on an 18-karat yellow gold trace chain.
